5 Reasons Venice Is Not A Great Travel Destination

In 1999, I went on a whirlwind trip around Italy through my high school. It was a very interesting trip and is what kicked off my love of travel. I mean, how could it not? It’s Italy after all!

The first weekend of our trip was in Rome/The Vatican. It was Easter Weekend, and it was quite a sight to see so many people on a religious pilgrimage. After seeing all the grand sites (and there are a lot of them) in this area, we traveled all over the rest of the country, including to my least favorite place – Venice.

I don’t care what you’ve heard about Venice and how amazing it is – I just didn’t like the place. Generally I like to write destination guides for my favorite places to tell you how good they are, but not this time. The following are five good reasons to steer clear of Venice.

Many of us from extremely developed nations are so busy knocking themselves out in the work office to try to make one or two extra paychecks to keep before the proverbial wolf so as to just pay for 1 or 2 baubles, truly. Wikipedia closes in Italy in free speech protest

There is a new law being pushed through in the Italian government that is causing much controversy. This law has a certain clause that will make all websites make changes in line with corrections submitted to them. The problem is that there is no system in place to make sure that these corrections are appropriate and no judicial review either. This law is designed to remove content that may offend individuals.

Many people will no doubt have something bad to say about this law, but it is the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia that is the most outraged. Wikipedia is a not for profit online encyclopaedia where the articles are written and reviewed by anyone, including some regular volunteers. Wikipedia have said that this new legislation is “an unacceptable restriction of the freedom and independence of Wikipedia,” and they claim it will undermine the bottom-up editing process that is so effective for them.
